Developmental Psychology on Method - Dictionary of Arguments

Upton I 18
Method/Developmental psychology/Upton:
A. Cross-sectional research involves looking at groups of people of differing ages. For example, if you are interested in how the self-concept differs in childhood and adolescence, you could compare a group of 10 year olds to a group of 14 year olds. This approach is commonly used because it is easy to complete and takes little time.
VsCross-sectional approach/Problem: The main limitation is that, even if you find that self-concept is different for your two groups of children, it is difficult to be sure of the extent to which this is due to age or some other cohort factor such as experiences at school.
Solution: The only way to determine whether or not changes are age-related is to carry out a longitudinal study.
B. Longitudinal study: This involves looking at the same group of people over a long period of time.
VsLongitudinal study/Problem: The main limitation with this type of research is that it is expensive and requires a large amount of time and dedication from both researchers and participants.
